The Cognition in Autism Research Lab at Murdoch University was established by Dr. Shu Yau in 2019. It is a space for academics and students to conduct research and co-design interventions that are useful and efficacious for the neurodiverse community. Our lab is comprised of twenty undergraduate and postgraduate researchers who are supervised by Dr. Yau.

In the lab, we are interested in how kids, teens and adults think, hear, and use language. We work with clinicians, families, and teachers to understand and improve learning and life outcomes in individuals with autism and their families. We believe in fair representation and research across all levels of the autism spectrum.

There are three streams within the lab that we focus on:

Neurocognition

  • Neuro (mobile child electroencephalogram [EEG])
  • Sound perception: hypersensitivity, social vs. non-social, infant biomarkers

Community

  • Barriers and facilitators of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) use in parents and clinicians
  • Factors influencing child AAC use
  • Social communication intervention review; social vs. non-social predictors of language
